BAND: Torture Wheel

BY UNKNOWN

Biografie

Torture Wheel was founded by E.M. Hearst in late December, 2002. Initially formed as a “Funeral Doom” band, Torture Wheel was heavily inspired (and primarily influenced) by the various funereal works of Stijn Van Cauter... ‘Beyond Black Void’ and ‘The Ethereal’ in particular. The earliest music created by Torture Wheel greatly reflected that influence and indeed the very first song written (Broken by the Wheel) was somewhat meant as a musical homage to The Ethereal. Other notable bands significant in the early development of Torture Wheel include: Shape of Despair, Skepticism, Esoteric, Catacombs and Hierophant.

The music began drastically evolving during the first 6 months of the band’s existence. Though it was still firmly entrenched in the principles of “Funeral Doom“, any clear influence from other bands began to dissipate. By the mid-summer of 2003, Torture Wheel had found it’s own sound... referred to by some as “Horror Funeral Doom”.

The first release from Torture Wheel came in August of 2003. It was a split CD with the UK Drone/Noise/Funeral band ’Uncertainty Principle’, released on the Belgium underground label NULLL Records. The three songs included on that split were very diverse and actually document the early evolution of the band: starting with the ruthless, minimalist funeral-tendencies of “Broken by the Wheel”... to the somewhat more complex and emotionally disturbing “Shadow Sect”... and finally, the psychotic wailing and surrealistic atmospheres of “Mary”.

Never content, Torture Wheel continues to evolve...

Another song (entitled Blood Mirror) was released in November 2003 on the NULLL Records compilation ‘From the NULLL Void’. It is a stripped-down early version of a song that will appear on the first full-length Torture Wheel album (which will likely be completed by mid-2004). There is also another compilation appearance planned in the near future on the new UK-based underground label “Buried and Forgotten”. This song (entitled Crushed Under...) shows a strong progression towards “Industrial Doom”... very heavy electronic elements were used in creating the track and it’s quite a departure from the earlier material... Torture Wheel will continue to perpetually evolve and experiment with musical styles... constant mutation has become the raison d’être of the band, though both “Doom” and “Horror” will remain permanent fixtures of the sound.

more to come...
